At BTG we take a different approach to digital innovation—focusing less on adopting new technologies for technology’s sake, and more on identifying key business problems to solve. We start by identifying a business case, then we seek out the best partners to provide cutting-edge services, like AI, blockchain, and analyzing digital biomarkers and real world data. By putting the business needs first, we ensure the scalability of these new technologies and systems to our operations.

Using lean startup principles to drive our digital innovation program, we have built a sustainable model that can evolve and grow with the needs of the organization, and respond to external changes in the market.

Many of our digital innovations start life as an idea crowdsourced from within the organization via our annual Innovators Challenge. Each year we choose three ideas with the potential to have a positive long-term impact on our business. We then select the right technology or startup partner and test their solution by running a proof of principle project to demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of the idea.

Key to our success is the culture of ‘digital thinking’ we have instilled at BTG across our business units and functional areas. Over the past 4 years we have run a series of Digital Boot Camps and other initiatives, which are transforming BTG’s approach to digital innovation.

Real World Data and Big Data Analytics

BTG is harnessing the power of real world data and big data analytics to better understand patient pathways and treatment patterns. Our projects include generating new patient insights via ‘digital biomarkers’ and using novel data visualization approaches to analyze disparate data sets.

Artificial Intelligence

BTG has set up pilot projects that use artificial intelligence (AI) to help identify hard-to-diagnose patients rapidly in real time. One pilot is working with patients who may be experiencing life-threatening toxicity effects from treatment with high-dose methotrexate (HDMTX toxicity), the other is focusing on patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE).

At BTG we are using blockchain technology to understand and manage supply chain operations for our antivenom product CroFab®. The project will ensure adequate stocks of antivenom are available where they are needed and will keep everyone in the chain informed.

Clinical Workflow and Interoperability

Building off a previous joint venture called Oncoverse to develop workflow tools for oncologists planning treatment plans, we have developed a secure digital platform for oncologists planning treatment plans and virtual consultations to assist the interventional medicine specialists we serve. Today this software stack serves as our Digital Preceptorship platform, enabling practitioners to consult with an expert in the field about the best approach to a specific clinical case.
