The TheraSphere’s journey begins with an empty, glass blown ampoule in Missouri. This is where the empty ampoule is then fillled with non-radioactive microspheres containing yttrium 89. Once filled, the product is then expertly sealed and shipped
to its next destination – Ontario, Canada.
Upon arrival in Ontario, the non-radioactive ampoule is inspected and held in inventory awaiting direction for its next stop. From here, the non-radioactive ampoule will travel to one of four reactor sites around the world – Canada, USA, Australia
or South Africa.
Next, the ampoule filled with yttrium 89 is delicately placed into the nuclear reactor to be transformed into radioactive Y90, better known as TheraSphere®. Following that, the product is then extracted from the reactor and sent back to Ontario.
Once TheraSphere arrives back in Ontario - it is precisely dispensed into individual dose vials to custom fit each order. Doses can range in size from 3GBq to 20GBq. Time is of the essence and great care is taken to ensure that TheraSphere arrives
at the right hospital at the right time.
TheraSphere vials travel to hospitals in 20 different countries around the world, including countries like Germany, Korea, South Africa, and Portugal. To date, Singapore is the furthest TheraSphere® destination.
