Here's why we're excited about Interventional Medicine

BTG is a leader in Interventional Medicine therapies – the fast growing field of minimally invasive, image-guided procedures used to treat a range of conditions.

The world of Interventional Medicine is expanding with a greater number of procedures being performed by a growing number of specialist physicians each year.  Driven by medical need, and enabled by advances in imaging and device technology, innovative companies like BTG are investing to develop the tools that let these physicians see more, reach further and treat smarter.  We’re making giant leaps with smaller, increasingly less invasive steps.

Our Interventional Medicine therapies aim to make a real difference in the lives of patients and the specialist physicians who treat them.

Improving patient care

Minimally invasive procedures improve patient care by delivering more targeted therapies, treating the disease locally and minimizing side effects.

For example, compared to systemic treatments, localized therapies can allow delivery of higher doses of radiation or chemotherapy to cancer cells while at the same time reducing unwanted impact on other parts of the body.

Minimally invasive therapies can also improve patients’ quality of life through shorter recovery times, avoiding the use of general anaesthesia, and offering a better patient experience as compared to conventional surgery.

Addressing unmet medical needs

Interventional Medicine offers hope to patients who are often faced with few options.

  • Although there have been significant advances in treating many types of cancer, liver cancer has remained a high unmet need with mortality rates among the highest of all cancers. Many of these patients have maximized their medical options and are not candidates for surgery.
  • People who experience a severe blood clot often receive only conservative anticoagulant therapy to prevent further clots, but the original clot is not treated owing to poor efficacy or complications with localised thrombolysis or other interventions to remove the clot.
  • Many patients with severe emphysema experience breathlessness despite rehabilitation, drug therapy, and supplemental oxygen.

Reducing healthcare costs

Interventional Medicine shifts care to less expensive outpatient settings and reduces in-hospital stays and occupancy of operating theatres.  These procedures usually allow physicians to avoid using general anesthesia and reduce the risk of infection – some have been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality as compared to conventional surgery.

By helping to avoid readmission, these procedures can reduce the cost of an episode of care and reduce the overall cost of care, which is especially important as hospitals move from ‘fee-for-service’ to new ‘outcomes-based’ and ‘value-based’ payment models.

We’re building a robust Interventional Medicine portfolio

BTG has successfully expanded its Interventional Medicine business, in part, by acquiring other leading interventional therapies and businesses. Today we have a diversified, balanced portfolio of differentiated therapies focused on the treatment of cancer, vascular disorders and severe emphysema.

But don’t take our word for it

The growth and potential for this exciting new approach to medicine is well documented by the societies and associations representing the interventional radiology community.

Below are a collection of short videos that capture that excitement and the meaningful difference interventional medicine therapies can make for patients.

These videos are meant to share the excitement in the medical community for Interventional Medicine and are NOT intended to suggest an endorsement of BTG or its products by these societies and associations.
