In critical care situations where cerebral blood flow is impaired, production of ATP, which transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism, is reduced. This can lead to cell death and neurological impairment. For example, it is estimated that around 60% of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery experience neurological deficits.

KTX0101 has been shown in preclinical models of permanent or transient focal ischaemia to protect the brain and prevent cell damage. It does this by acting as a “super fuel” for ATP production, preventing free radical damage and enabling cell survival. It has successfully completed a Phase I study showing it was well-tolerated with a predictable pharmacokinetic profile.
